I got a free Mongoose road bike today, with a flip flop, open/fixie hub. So I’m swapping the “good” parts onto this old Raleigh frame I had stashed away that was also free!

Needs some work still. I still need to hog out the front forks. The original axel was 1/4 not 3/8s I think. Then I need to get a seat post as the one on the Mongoose was too think, get a chain, and lube the crank, and headset.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Oh and some pics of the frame the day I got it. A few years ago my neighbor just trew it out on his front sidewalk for some one to pick up.

I converted an old Schwinn to single speed. I learned that my knees weren’t up to the hills on a single speed. I could have geared it lower, but then I wouldn’t have been as fast on the flats. I switched back after I picked up barcons for my primary bike and moved the brifters over to the old bike.

I’m sure your bike will be fun. Good luck with it!

Do your sick skids and what have you on the crap frame. Cold setting steel forks without a jig and some prior experience always yields a bike going sideways down the road. If not micro-fractures and flaking paint.

You want to fixie, build a rear wheel with flip-flop hub and buy a single speed chainring for the road crank. Then just learn on the crap bikes and come back to the HEAVY AS FUUUUUCK Raleigh with so much fucking mass it will be an absolute horror show to slow the momentum of if you feel like playing in traffic without brakes is still fun.

I know it’s not a good bike. But it is a bike. And looks cooler than any off the self Walmart turd. Even tho the parts are Walmart turds.

This bike already has a flip flop hub. And I’ve always had bikes with no brakes. I’m sure in a city it’s a dangerous but in a small town it’s not a big deal “traffic” here is more than 10 cars on Main Street all at once.

Thanks it’s surely not ideal, but it’ll work.

That looks a lot like the bike I just got, for free, and built in to a commuter!

Very nice. I’ve converted a few bikes over my years. One I loved was an old C.Itoh that one of my college roomies bought from me in the 70's. I still ride an 83 Gitane Sprint that I converted into a 14 speed bike for centuries. If you ever come across info you need here is a source http://www.sheldonbrown.com/ . In the 80s and 90s he and I conversed by letter and later e-mail about some old rides and various hard to get parts. I contributed some of the dimensions in his charts from a few old odd european bikes. There is a lot of information on there about DIY and Fixies.

Very cool thank you. As you can see I’m pretty much just getting into the Hobby. Well I’ve been working on bikes since I was 5 but that’s was more for necessity, because all I has was hand me downs and Walmart bikes that I constantly broke and rebuilt.

A few years ago, I came across Sheldon Brown’s page when I was researching winter cycling tips and tricks. After after reading it for a while, I wanted to email him... and just as I got to doing that, I came across something on his site that reported he had been killed by a drunk driver... and it felt like a total kick in the gut.

I have a Mongoose carbon frame from 1994. The 28mm seatpost size is annoying

Knew he was gone. It was known in cycling community back when it happened. I can’t recall if I saw it on the web or in a magazine.
